There are many types of HPV. Most types are not harmful but a couple are. The HPV types 16 and 18 are the most harmful. They are responsible for 75% of the cervical cancer cases.

The HPV-Human papilloma virus is common. In most cases when infected with the virus the body itself will clear the virus within 2 years. In the cases that the body doesn’t clear away the virus the virus will stay in the body for a long time. Then the virus can cause cancer cells to form.

In what cases is the body likely to be unable to clear away the virus?

  • A reduced immune system. The body isn’t capable of clearing away the virus when using medication which lower the immune system. Like medication used after organ transplantation. Also women with HIV, human immunodeficiency virus have a greater chance of developing cancer.
  • Cancer occurs more in people who smoke. Smoking causes damage to the cells in our body. Also when you smoke the immune system doesn’t work optimal. Because of this the body is less able to clear the virus.
  • Infection of chlamydia or herpes. The infection increases the chance of developing cancer.
  • Infection with multiple HPV-types. These infections increase the chance of developing cancer.
  • Sexual contacts that change a lot. HPV is a STD (sexual transmissive disease). So when the sexual contacts change a lot the chance of getting infected with HPV increases.
